Big Green Egg flavour fair 2015 - review

By June 21, 2015 , , ,

On a wet and windy Sunday I took myself to Landgoed Heerlijkheid Marienwaerdt in Beesd in the Netherlands for my annual pilgrimage for the Big Green Egg flavour fair members day.

Not the most ideal weather for BBQing but the weather held off enough for me to make my way around the event and enjoy the food. I also managed to fit in (and win) another BBQ competition as well while I was there. Julius Jaspers who ran the Taste of Amsterdam challenge was the judge as well as Gertjan Kiers again. We had to cook a steak and make a mayonnaise by hand, no easy feat in the pouring rain, but fun. The competition is run every year and you can enter in advance.

The event was much bigger than last years and well laid out. Rather than stands dotted around the edge they had food focussed areas for bread, veg, fish, meat. The great thing about this event is that you get to sample lots of different foods from some great restaurants such as Ciel Bleu, De Librije, Pure Passie, Bavette and many more. There was also a much bigger demo theatre this year, but there were also smaller demo areas where you could watch chefs give various cooking demonstrations on of course the big green egg.

De Librije had a pop up restaurant this year that sadly I didn't get a chance to indulge in as the queues were pretty long, but it's a great idea. Next year I'll get in a bit earlier and grab a place!

All in all, a good day despite the weather and a lovely goodie bag with a really well put together cookbook, a jar of spices from the Jonnie Boer collection and BGE flavoured chocolate amongst others. Though getting an aubergine two years in a row, well next year maybe something else might be in order.  I think the only downside was the entrance which was smaller than last year and not very well manned so the queues were pretty long which isn't good when its raining. Also this year sadly no glass of fizz when you arrived like last year which did add a nice touch when you arrived.

I'm looking forward to next years event already, lets hope the rain holds off!
